Custom Pet Portraits
A custom pet portrait is a fun and special piece of art to hang in your home or a meaningful gift for anyone with animals. I paint these in watercolor and include lots of great detail, texture and personality. I strive to find a nice balance between realism and expressiveness in these paintings. They are painted on very heavy weight, archival watercolor paper.
Pet Portrait FAQ
What do you need to paint my dog or cat?
I work from your photos. Typically sending more than one photo is helpful, especially if they are less than perfect.
What if I don't have any good pictures of my pet? What if they are a little blurry?
I can work from your photos even if they are blurry or poorly lit. Sending multiple photos and any helpful notes (e.g. eye color or fur color) is especially helpful in this case. I will often come up with a new compostion based on multiple photos.
I'm not sure which image would be best for my pet portrait.
Send your photos on over! I am happy to give advice on what I can do and what I think would make a nice portrait.
How do I send you pictures of my pet?
You can email me your photos.
Can you tell me a little more about the process of commissioning a custom pet portrait?
Once I have the photos and the desired size I will come up with a preliminary drawing. I email you this drawing for your approval and any alterations can be made at this point. Once it is approved I start painting. After the watercolor is complete it is scanned and sent for approval and I can make alterations and final touches if needed.
What sizes are your pet portraits? How much does a pet portrait cost?
The cost is determinded by the size and background of the painting. Paintings with a plain white background (or minimal washes) are a bit less expensive. I can paint any size you wish, but these are the most common standard sizes I paint.
5x7 (White background): $120
5x7 Full watercolor: $150
8x10 (White background): $180
8x10 Full watercolor: $250
11x14 (White background) $280
11x14 Full watercolor: $350

How long will it take to finish my painting?
Please allow 1-3 weeks for your painting to be completed. Contact me for rush orders. I can accomodate most deadlines.
Christmas season is especially busy for me and placing your order 1 or even 2 months in advance is a good idea, however I often accept holiday orders up until the week before Christmas so it doesn't hurt to check with me.
Will you paint...?
Yes! I will paint your rabbit, ferret, reptile, horse or any other pet.
How do I order / pay?

A Few Reviews
I'm so happy with how the painting turned out. It is in no way a mere copy of a photo but a perfect combination of our dog's personality and artistic talent with a very personal touch to it. I just love it!
The portrait of my two beautiful dogs captured their likeness and personality . It is a beautiful painting that we will treasure. David was very quick and provided me with updates at every stage. Because it needed to be shipped to canada he rushed the order so it would be here in time for Christmas.

David was very thorough and wanted to know a lot about our dog before starting. He really captured her expression and it feels like she is looking right at us. He was great to work with and accommodated me to have it ready for X-mas, also sending the sketch and picture by e-mail first to see if I wanted anything changed.

Excellent workmanship, quickly completed, and a speedy delivery. David captured my Levi exactly and he kept in communication throughout the entire process. Looking forward to my next purchase!
